Digital operational excellence relies primarily on the implementation of a pre-defined digital transformation strategy. The systematic transformation process is aimed at achieving a sustainable increase in performance that aligns with the goals defined in the strategy – in other words, at achieving digital operational excellence. As illustrated in Figure 1, this all-essential digital operational excellence arises from the smooth interaction of the three core areas of technology, organisation (and culture) and processes.

Figure 1: Digital operational excellence as the interaction of three core areas

Any areas of action identified in relation to this interaction can be further verified and converted into concrete measures – for example, categorised according to individual levels of the value chain.

In line with a previously defined transformation strategy, the process illustrated in Figure 2 provides a framework for the subsequent implementation of these areas of action.

Figure 2: General process model for the systematic achievement of digital operational excellence

  • The initial status quo analysis provides further details in relation to the analysis carried out previously as part of the strategy definition process. What results is a detailed verification of the potentials identified in the strategy
  • The following phase involves the creation of a transformation roadmap in which the previously defined areas of action are translated into concrete measures and transferred into a detailed plan incl. times, responsibilities, priorities, etc.
  • In accordance with the transformation roadmap created in the second phase, the implementation is then accompanied by systematic performance management. This is primarily about orchestrating the interaction of the the three core areas of technology, organisation (and culture) and process as described above. Rapid initial success can be achieved through selected pilots that are supported with the necessary resources and then cited as “flagship products”, raising awareness for the relevant aspects across the entire organisation

Concrete examples of use and use cases for “digital operational excellence” must always be placed in the context of the initial problem. Contact us to discuss successful examples of digital transformation that are relevant to your company and industry.
