Agentic AI describes AI systems that plan, decide and act independently on the basis of multi-stage, chained processes. An AI agent researches, evaluates, draws conclusions, formulates options for action and carries these out autonomously within defined limits. In combination, multi-agent architectures enable the full automation of complex business processes that previously necessarily required human coordination.

Context and relevance

AI thereby moves from a reactive assistant to an active process actor. Purchasing agents compare offers, initiate tenders and escalate risks autonomously. Sales agents qualify leads, prepare offers and coordinate follow-up processes without manual intervention. Analytics agents monitor metrics, detect anomalies and initiate countermeasures in real time. The value-creation potential of agentic systems is considerable, but so too is the complexity of implementation. Agent architecture, tool-chain integration, multi-agent orchestration and prompt engineering are highly specialised disciplines that determine the effectiveness and stability of agentic systems. Our approach

Functioning agentic systems require the mastery of four closely interlocking core disciplines, conceptually and in implementation (Figure 1: Four core disciplines of agentic systems – FOSTEC & Company). The approach follows three steps:

1. Agent Architecture Blueprint: the starting point is the agent architecture blueprint, which precisely defines the processes to be automated, the required agent roles, decision logic, escalation paths and governance mechanisms, and thereby sets the limits of autonomous action in a binding way. In parallel, the prompt-engineering architecture is developed, which ensures that agents act reliably, consistently and controllably.
2. Tool-chain integration & system connection: on the basis of the blueprint, all required tools, APIs, data sources and internal systems are connected to the agents. The tool-chain integration plan ensures that agents can not only analyse, but create documents, control systems and trigger processes. Where specialised implementation partners are required, FOSTEC & Company coordinates the collaboration from a network of highly specialised AI-technology partners.
3. Multi-agent orchestration & operation: finally, all agents are translated into a coherent orchestration framework that configures task division, handover protocols, monitoring and error handling so that the overall system runs stably, comprehensibly and in a scalable way. A prompt library documents all instruction patterns and enables continuous optimisation by the client’s own team, even after project completion.

Results and impact
